The Code Of Practice 8 Is On The Most Serious End Of The HMRC Spectrum
The Code Of Practice 8 (COP8) is used in cases where HM Revenue & Customs suspect that you have been deliberately attempting to pay a reduced amount of tax, or attempting to use a scheme to reduce your personal tax liability.
The COP8 is less serious than the COP9 because it doesn’t involve a civil investigation of fraud procedures, but it is still on the most serious end of the HMRC spectrum. Instead of a civil and potential criminal investigation, the goal when issuing a COP8 is just to recover any taxes, interest and penalties that are owed. This will remain the case unless evidence of serious fraud is present.
